New AI Processor from AMD is here to take on Nvidia

AMD revealed on Tuesday that it would begin selling its most sophisticated GPU for AI, the MI300X, to select clients later this year in an effort to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in the AI chip market. AMD’s latest initiative is its most serious assault yet to Nvidia’s dominant position in the artificial intelligence (AI) chip business, and it might provide AMD access to a sizable untapped market.

Graphics processing units, or GPUs, are essential tools that businesses like OpenAI use to create innovative AI software like ChatGPT. By releasing its artificial intelligence chips, or “accelerators,” AMD hopes to use its competence in conventional computer processors to establish itself as a competitive alternative to Nvidia.

AI is the greatest and most critical long-term growth potential for AMD, CEO Lisa Su said at a San Francisco presentation for investors and analysts. According to Su’s forecast, the market for AI accelerators in data centers would rise at a CAGR of more than 50% between now and 2027, from $30 billion to more than $150 billion.

Nvidia’s GPUs, including the expensive H100, which can cost more than $30,000, may see their prices fall as a result of competition from AMD’s MI300X, the pricing of which has not been made public. GPU price drops might make generative AI applications more affordable to operate, opening the door to their widespread use.

With the decline of PC sales, a major driver for semiconductor processor demand, the market for AI chips has emerged as a potential area within the semiconductor industry. During her talk, Lisa Su spoke about the new MI300X processor and its ability to handle big language models and other complex AI programs. The MI300X, driven by AMD’s CDNA architecture, has a whopping 192GB of RAM. This makes it possible to house even more substantial AI models than can be accommodated by current devices like Nvidia’s H100, which has a memory cap of 120GB.

Large amounts of memory are required for language models used in generative AI applications because of the increasing number of computations they must do. To demonstrate the MI300X’s capabilities, AMD ran a 40 billion parameter model known as Falcon without a hitch. To put that number in perspective, the well-known GPT-3 model developed by OpenAI has 175 billion parameters.

AMD guarantees that developers may depend on its processors with increased memory capacity to enable the execution of the newest complex language models, which need substantial computing power. Developers using AMD’s AI hardware may not need as many GPUs as they would otherwise.

Additionally, AMD announced its intention to provide the Infinity Architecture, a solution that integrates eight M1300X accelerators into a single chassis. This strategy is consistent with efforts by Nvidia and Google to create systems that integrate eight or more GPUs into a single box to support AI applications.

Nvidia’s CUDA software package, which has been around for a while and gives access to the chip maker’s key hardware capabilities, has made it a favorite among AI programmers. Recognizing the need of allowing developers to access an open ecosystem of models, libraries, frameworks, and tools, AMD responded by introducing its own software ecosystem for AI processors called ROCm.
